Join Galway Civic Trust’s Ronan Harvey for a unique Heritage Week tour exploring the military heritage of Galway at St. Patrick’s Garrison Church and Renmore Barracks Military Museum (Dún Uí Mhaoilíosa).
The tour begins at St. Patrick’s Garrison Church, the spiritual home of the 1st Infantry Battalion (An Chéad Cathlán Coisithe) of the Irish Defence Forces. This striking church features ornate stained-glass windows, regimental standards, and a quiet dignity that reflects its long-standing role in military and local life.
From there, visitors will be guided to the Military Museum at Renmore Barracks – a hidden gem dedicated to preserving the stories of Irish soldiers. Exhibits include uniforms, weapons, photographs, and personal artefacts from the Connaught Rangers, as well as from Irish peacekeeping missions around the world.
A special section of the museum honours Liam Mellows, the revolutionary figure after whom the barracks was renamed in 1952. This tour offers powerful insights into Ireland’s military past, the legacy of service, and the lives behind the history.
