Scéalta Fiannaíochta, Folklore and Storytelling Traditions
Máirín Mhic Lochlainn
Saturday 22 August 2026 | 3:00 PM – 4:00 PM
Mick Lally Theatre, Druid Lane, Galway
Experience one of Ireland’s oldest living traditions with award-winning seanchaí Máirín Mhic Lochlainn, one of the country’s most respected traditional storytellers.
Originally from Rós a’ Mhíl in Connemara, Máirín has dedicated her life to preserving and sharing the rich oral traditions of Ireland. A winner of the prestigious Corn Neidí Frainc at the Oireachtas and former Storyteller-in-Residence at the University of Galway’s Centre for Irish Studies, she has performed and delivered workshops throughout Ireland and internationally.
Drawing on a lifetime immersed in the storytelling tradition, Máirín will share Scéalta Fiannaíochta, local folklore, and treasured stories passed down through generations, many learned from her father, the renowned storyteller Beartla Ó Maoileoin. Presented in Irish, with English translations and explanations, her performance brings to life the heroes, legends, humour, and wisdom that have been carried through centuries by Ireland’s oral tradition.
This is a rare opportunity to hear authentic storytelling from one of the finest practitioners of the art, celebrating a tradition that remains at the heart of Ireland’s intangible cultural heritage.
This event forms part of Galway Civic Trust: A Celebration of Heritage 2026, a full-day programme presented during National Heritage Week 2026. Held across the Mick Lally Theatre, the Hall of the Red Earl, and the Peadar O’Dowd Gallery, the day features talks, exhibitions, living history displays, film screenings, and an evening concert, celebrating Galway’s heritage while reflecting this year’s Heritage Week theme, “Heritage at Risk.”
