What do we mean by heritage, and why is it at risk? From historic buildings and archaeological monuments to archives, waterways, traditions, and community memories, this talk examines the many forms of heritage that shape Galway’s identity and the challenges involved in protecting them for future generations.
The session also provides an opportunity to meet members of Galway Civic Trust, learn about the organisation’s work in conserving and promoting Galway’s heritage, and discover how local communities can become involved. Visitors are invited to ask questions, seek advice on heritage-related topics, explore the day’s programme, and find out more about the Trust’s guided tours, exhibitions, conservation projects, and educational initiatives.

This session opens Galway Civic Trust: A Celebration of Heritage 2026, a full-day programme presented during National Heritage Week 2026. Taking place across the Mick Lally Theatre, the Hall of the Red Earl, and the Peadar O’Dowd Gallery, the day features talks, exhibitions, living history displays, storytelling, film screenings, and an evening concert, all inspired by this year’s theme, “Heritage at Risk.”
