The Peadar O’Dowd Memorial Waterways Tour
The Peadar O’Dowd Memorial Waterways Tour is a free weekly guided walking tour celebrating Galway’s unique and often overlooked water heritage — from medieval canals and historic bridges to mills, quays, and water-powered industry.
Led by local historian and tour guide Ian Brophy, the tour brings participants on an engaging journey through the story of Galway’s waterways and their vital role in shaping the city’s history, character, and development.
This tour is named in honour of Peadar O’Dowd, a founding member of Galway Civic Trust and one of the most important champions of Galway’s waterways. In 1967, Peadar established the Galway Waterways Preservation Society and led successful campaigns to save the Eglinton Canal and Claddagh Basin from destruction at a time when much of Galway’s water heritage was under threat.
Peadar’s vision and tireless advocacy laid the groundwork for the protection and appreciation of Galway’s waterways today. By sharing these stories with the public, this weekly tour continues his life’s work — promoting awareness, conservation, and pride in Galway’s living heritage.
The Peadar O’Dowd Memorial Waterways Tour is both a tribute to his legacy and an invitation to rediscover the waterways that continue to shape Galway.
