The Deserted Anglo-Norman Town and Castle at Rindoon, Co. Roscommon

Archaeologist Kieran O’Conor explores the story of Rindoon, a once-thriving Anglo-Norman town and castle complex in County Roscommon. Founded in the 13th century on the shores of Lough Ree, Rindoon was strategically situated within the western limits of Norman expansion in Ireland. Abandoned by the late Middle Ages, the site today preserves remarkable remains that offer a rare window into medieval life. O’Conor discusses the town’s founding, layout, and eventual decline within the broader context of shifting power dynamics in the region. He also presents recent archaeological insights into how Rindoon functioned as both a military and economic hub. This talk forms part of a special day-long programme of heritage events presented by Galway Civic Trust / Dúchas na Gaillimhe in honour of the late Peadar O’Dowd (1941–2024) — esteemed local historian, author, educator, and founding member of the Trust. Peadar’s lifelong dedication to preserving and sharing Galway’s rich history has left an enduring legacy, and this commemorative series reflects the breadth of his interests, from medieval archaeology to waterways, migration, music, and community memory.
