Marek Sztendel, a Fáilte Ireland Regional Tour Guide and long-time Galway taxi driver, offers an insightful and personal exploration of Galway through the eyes of the Polish community. This unique presentation brings together Marek’s experiences as both a cultural ambassador and a frontline observer of daily life in Galway. With humour, curiosity, and a deep appreciation for history, he reflects on the ways in which Galway’s identity is experienced, interpreted, and embraced by those who have made it their new home. Through his work on Galway’s streets and his community connections, Marek presents themes of migration, memory, adaptation, and belonging. This talk highlights the role of new communities in shaping Galway’s contemporary cultural landscape while paying homage to its enduring traditions. A powerful reminder of how heritage lives not only in buildings and artefacts, but also in stories, perspectives, and people.
This talk forms part of a special day-long programme of heritage events presented by Galway Civic Trust / Dúchas na Gaillimhe in honour of the late Peadar O’Dowd (1941–2024) — esteemed local historian, author, educator, and founding member of the Trust. Peadar’s lifelong dedication to preserving and sharing Galway’s rich history has left an enduring legacy, and this commemorative series reflects the breadth of his interests, from medieval archaeology to waterways, migration, music, and community memory.
The full programme includes a range of lectures, performances, tours, and cultural activities at the Mick Lally Theatre and the Hall of the Red Earl, both located on Druid Lane in Galway’s Latin Quarter. The event brings together local historians, artists, and community voices in a shared celebration of Galway’s heritage — past, present, and evolving.
