A Talk in Memory of Peadar O’Dowd – William Henry

William Henry presents a tribute to Peadar O’Dowd (1941–2024), the celebrated local historian, author, and founding member of Galway Civic Trust. This commemorative talk reflects on Peadar’s deep and lasting influence on the preservation and celebration of Galway’s heritage. As a historian, Peadar’s work ranged from the waterways and medieval city walls to the people and stories that defined Galway’s identity. William Henry, a close colleague and fellow historian, will share personal anecdotes, reflections on Peadar’s most significant contributions, and the impact of his publications and public engagement. The session offers a heartfelt look at Peadar’s legacy — not only as a scholar but as a generous spirit who brought history to life for generations of Galwegians. This talk forms part of a special day-long programme of heritage events presented by Galway Civic Trust / Dúchas na Gaillimhe in honour of the late Peadar O’Dowd (1941–2024) — esteemed local historian, author, educator, and founding member of the Trust. Peadar’s lifelong dedication to preserving and sharing Galway’s rich history has left an enduring legacy, and this commemorative series reflects the breadth of his interests, from medieval archaeology to waterways, migration, music, and community memory.
