We are thrilled to announce that in 2024, the Hall of the Red Earl welcomed over 27,000 visitors, marking a significant milestone in our ongoing mission to preserve and promote Galway’s rich heritage. This remarkable achievement reflects the growing interest in our city’s history and the vibrant cultural events hosted at this iconic medieval site.

A Year of Memorable Events

Throughout 2024, the Hall of the Red Earl served as a dynamic venue for a diverse array of events, each contributing to the cultural tapestry of Galway. Here are some highlights:

  • David Beattie’s “Tokens” Exhibition: As part of the TULCA Festival, artist David Beattie unveiled “Tokens,” a thought-provoking artwork crafted from repurposed car parts. This installation explored the value of waste materials in our society and resonated deeply with the hall’s historical use as a smelting site in the 16th and 17th centuries.

  • Guided Tour with Historian William Henry: Renowned local historian and author William Henry led an engaging tour of the Hall, offering attendees rich insights into its 13th-century origins and its pivotal role in Galway’s development.

  • Lá na Cruite (Harp Day) Celebrations: In October, the Hall resonated with the enchanting sounds of the harp during the Lá na Cruite celebrations. The event featured performances by esteemed harpists, celebrating Ireland’s national instrument and its enduring cultural significance.

  • 30th Anniversary of Galway Civic Trust: August marked the 30th anniversary of the Galway Civic Trust. The celebration included a series of talks, performances, and cultural showcases, underscoring three decades of dedication to preserving Galway’s heritage.

  • Irish Patchwork Society Exhibition: During Heritage Week, the Irish Patchwork Society’s Western Branch presented an exhibition titled “Ireland,” showcasing quilts that artistically celebrated various facets of Irish culture and history.

  • Poetry Readings by Skylight 47: The literary community gathered for evocative poetry readings by Skylight 47, offering reflections on the natural beauty and mythology of the West of Ireland.
