The book\u2019s full title was\u00a0<em>A Gift to Those who Contemplate the Wonders of Cities and the Marvels of Travelling<\/em>\u00a0and somehow the title of Ibn Jazayy&#8217;s record of Ibn Battuta&#8217;s travels captures the ethos of many of the city and country journeys I have been lucky to take in past years.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>This particular Rihla is intensely local to the place where I live. It is an account of an urban walk I organise on the last Sunday of most months, wandering through time and location in Galway to touch upon \u2013 to imagine in many instances \u2013 the appearance and disappearance of a town\u2019s history of social care\/health institutions. It is and will always remain a work and a walk in progress; evolving as new buildings are erected, new care functions established for the future and more information\u00a0<\/em><em>about<\/em><em>\u00a0the past becomes available.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><span>For anybody who is interested I usually conduct this walk on the last Sunday of most months, from August to May. There is no cost involved and if you come and want to make a contribution then the Irish Red Cross or Cope Galway would be delighted to receive them. The walk lasts 3.5 &#8211; 4 hrs with a stop for coffee.
