Galway Civic Trust is delighted to unveil an innovative new pilot scheme aimed at addressing one of the city\u2019s most enduring challenges: traffic congestion in the historic core.<\/p>\n

Introducing\u2026 The Medieval Mobility Initiative\u2122<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Drawing inspiration from Galway\u2019s rich medieval heritage, this ambitious plan proposes a return to period-appropriate transport solutions<\/em> within the city walls – specifically, the reintroduction of horse-drawn traffic<\/strong>, handcarts<\/strong>, and, in select ceremonial cases, oxen-led freight movement<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

\ud83d\udc0e Back to the Future<\/h3>\n

Following extensive (and spirited) consultation with \u201cleading experts in medieval logistics\u201d (and several enthusiastic school history classes), the initiative aims to:<\/p>\n

    \n
  • Replace cars within the Latin Quarter with horse and cart lanes<\/strong><\/li>\n
  • Install timber hitching posts<\/strong> at key locations across the city<\/li>\n
  • Introduce a \u201cClip-Clop Priority System\u201d<\/strong> at pedestrian crossings<\/li>\n
  • Trial a new \u201cNeigh & Display\u201d parking permit scheme<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    Early projections suggest the plan could reduce emissions, slow down traffic, and significantly increase the purchase of cloaks, boots, and artisan bread.<\/p>\n

    \ud83d\udee1\ufe0f Heritage Meets Innovation<\/h3>\n

    Speaking on the announcement, a spokesperson for Galway Civic Trust said:<\/p>\n

    \u201cGalway has always been a city that honours its past while embracing the future. Sometimes, the best way forward\u2026 is several centuries back.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

    The Trust is also exploring the feasibility of:<\/p>\n

      \n
    • A city-wide curfew bell<\/strong> to replace late-night taxi queues<\/li>\n
    • Official town criers<\/strong> for public announcements (weather permitting)<\/li>\n
    • A pilot moat reinstallation feasibility study<\/strong> around Eyre Square<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

      Residents are invited to attend a public consultation event where they can:<\/p>\n

        \n
      • Test-drive a handcart<\/li>\n
      • Meet \u201ctransport consultants\u201d in full medieval attire<\/li>\n
      • Provide feedback via parchment and quill<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

        Light refreshments (ale-adjacent beverages and rustic oat biscuits) will be served.<\/p>\n
