William Henry presents a tribute to Peadar O\u2019Dowd (1941\u20132024), the celebrated local historian, author, and founding member of Galway Civic Trust. This commemorative talk reflects on Peadar\u2019s deep and lasting influence on the preservation and celebration of Galway\u2019s heritage. As a historian, Peadar\u2019s work ranged from the waterways and medieval city walls to the people and stories that defined Galway\u2019s identity. William Henry, a close colleague and fellow historian, will share personal anecdotes, reflections on Peadar\u2019s most significant contributions, and the impact of his publications and public engagement. The session offers a heartfelt look at Peadar\u2019s legacy \u2014 not only as a scholar but as a generous spirit who brought history to life for generations of Galwegians. A meaningful opportunity to honour one of the city\u2019s great cultural custodians.<\/span><\/p>\n

This talk forms part of a special day-long programme of heritage events presented by Galway Civic Trust \/ D\u00fachas na Gaillimhe in honour of the late Peadar O\u2019Dowd (1941\u20132024) \u2014 esteemed local historian, author, educator, and founding member of the Trust. Peadar\u2019s lifelong dedication to preserving and sharing Galway\u2019s rich history has left an enduring legacy, and this commemorative series reflects the breadth of his interests, from medieval archaeology to waterways, migration, music, and community memory.<\/p>\n

The full programme includes a range of lectures, performances, tours, and cultural activities at the Mick Lally Theatre and the Hall of the Red Earl, both located on Druid Lane in Galway\u2019s Latin Quarter.
