David Beattie\u2019s Tokens is a new artwork commissioned for
\nTULCA, produced from redundant car parts and exploring the
\nvalue of waste material in a carbon-based society. A series
\nof small spherical sculptures are the result of Beattie\u2019s
\nsmelting and extraction of precious metals from catalytic
\nconverters in automobiles. Tokens also gently refers to the
\nsite of its exhibition, at the archaeological remains of The
\nHall of the Red Earl in Galway. It was discovered during
\nexcavations in the 1990s that the medieval structure was
\nreused as a furnace for iron smelting in the sixteenth and
\nseventeenth centuries.<\/p>\n

Beattie notes: \u2018Promoted as an efficient way of reducing air
\npollutants in vehicles, catalytic converters contain precious
\nmetals that are resold to extract the value of these metals.
\nHaving been heavily processed initially to manufacture the
\noriginal catalytic converter, the \u201cscrap\u201d car part is then later
\nput through another round of extractive processes to obtain
\nminiscule amounts of rare metals.\u2019 Criminal gangs are
\noften reported stealing catalytic converters before setting
\nup makeshift smelting operations to distil their bounty.
\nCorporate industry even attempted to claim responsible
\naction around the topic. In 2014, Reuters released a story
\nwith the headline \u2018\u00a3100,000 each year from dust swept off
\nstreets. It reported that every day, catalytic converters in
\ncars spit out minute particles of platinum and palladium
\nthat end up in road sweepings gathered by waste recyclers,
\nlike industrial conglomerate Veolia. They claimed to have
\nstarted filtering out these precious metals from the 40,000
\ntonnes of dust it treats per year. \u2018We have a surface mine
\non our city streets, Estelle Brachlianoff, head of Veolia UK
\nand Ireland, told reporters. The story was later debunked
\nas a greenwashing exercise. Beattie reflects that, \u2018Ina
\nconstant state of becoming something else, these minerals
\nhighlight the commodification of natural resources, and the
\nenvironmental impact of mineral extraction.<\/p>\n

More artworks on display by Beattie include Shifting
\nForms, an exploration of the use of mimicry in the ongoing
\ndevelopment and pursuit of artificial intelligence, seen
\nwith an ultraviolet fly zapper, robotic vacuum cleaner, and
\ncollection of carnivorous plants together in a domestic
\nmise-en-sc\u00e9ne of Beattie\u2019s making. Erratic invites the viewer
\nto \u2018activate\u2019 a printed photograph of a rock using augmented
\nreality and a smartphone. Another variation on this theme,
\nRemnants, examines mythology, folklore and oral history in
\nthe age of digital reproduction and algorithmic narratives.
\nMade during an artist residency at Askeaton Contemporary
\nArts, Beattie conducted extensive fieldwork around sites of
\nancient ritual at nearby Grange stone circle. In navigating
\nthe resulting 3D digital scan, an accompanying story about
\nthe site generated by Al continually interrupts, resets and
\nchanges, seemingly unable to grasp the extent and richness
\nof the world we live in.<\/p>\n
