Education Packs for Schools<\/strong><\/p>\n

\"\"In 2003 Galway Civic Trust was granted \u20ac2,500 by the Heritage Council towards the cost of producing an education pack for schools. Entitled Galway – It’s My City \/ Gaillimh – ‘S\u00e9 Mo Chathair, the pack was written and published by Galway Civic Trust for distribution to all of the Primary Schools in the city, and was launched by the then Minister for Community, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs, \u00c9amon \u00d3 Cuiv. The pack was the first such educational resource produced in Ireland for use alongside the existing Primary School curriculum. The material contained in the Pack is specifically related to Galway city, with a comprehensive section on “Galway – It’s History and Heritage”.<\/p>\n

Galway – It’s My City \/ Gaillimh – ‘S\u00e9 Mo Chathair is designed for use by 5th and 6th class primary students, and it aims to create a knowledge of what makes Galway special, thereby encouraging our youth to take pride in their City, and become the kind of citizens who take care of it.<\/p>\n

Its my city Galway – It’s My City \/ Gaillimh – ‘S\u00e9 Mo Chathair, was produced by former Galway Civic Trust manager, Jackie U\u00ed Chionna. This engaging education pack aims to create a knowledge of what makes Galway special, thereby encouraging our youth to take pride in their city, and become the kind of citizens who take care of it. The pack provides a comprehensive history of Galway city and promotes awareness of local community and environmental issues by encouraging classes to undertake various practical activities. The pack is designed primarily for use by 5th and 6th class primary students but can also be used by teachers and students of all ages interested in the vibrant history of Galway city.<\/p>\n

Transition Year Competition<\/strong><\/h3>\n

The Trust has run an annual competition for Transition Year students in Galway entitled Capturing Galway’s Heritage<\/strong>. The competition encouraged young people to engage with a facet of Galway’s rich and varied heritage and to present it in an appropriate project format.<\/p>\n

Previous winners and projects include:<\/p>\n

2015: Seamount College, Kinvara – Loughnane Quinn Memorial Hall and the Black and Tans in Ardrahan.<\/p>\n

2014: Presentation College Tuam – The Tuam Mother and Baby Convent.<\/p>\n

GMIT Heritage Studies\u00a0Student of the Year Award<\/strong><\/p>\n

Student of the Year Award: Galway Civic Trust was proud to sponsor the annual B.A (Honours) Heritage Studies Student of the Year Award at Galway Mayo Institute of Technology. This award is a scaled replica of the beautiful perpetual sculpture \u2018Tribes\u2019 which is held in GMIT. This piece entitled was commissioned by the Trust from sculptor Ronan Halpin.<\/p>\n

Dissertation Sponsorship<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Trust has sponsored the dissertation research of a GMIT Heritage Studies student in previous academic years. The Trust\u00a0 provided these students with practical support and advice in relation to their chosen topic. These bodies of work have formed the basis of other Trust projects and have given students the opportunity of having a practical application applied to their research.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Hidden Treasure Heritage Trail<\/strong><\/h2>\n

\"\"The Hidden Treasure Heritage Trail<\/strong> of Galway city is a fun educational event ideal for schools, scouts, youth groups and families. Along the trail you will find ten plaques Galway Civic Trust has erected to commemorate buildings, people and events which have helped to shape the unique heritage of Galway. Each of the ten plaques holds the answer to a question along the trail, using the map to assist you, follow the trail, read the plaques closely and answer the questions before returning your questionnaire. All forms will be entered into a draw at the end of the year to win a prize sponsored by Galway Civic Trust. The questionnaire can be\u00a0downloaded here<\/strong><\/a> or picked up from the Trust’s office.<\/p>\n
