Dating back to the 13th century, the archaeological ruins are linked to the founding of the city itself by the Anglo-Norman De Burgo clan. An opportunity to glimpse an accurate depiction of medieval life as experienced by Anglo-Normans at the Hall of the Red Earl, Druid Lane, Galway. We will be hosting two full day events of medieval reenactments, played out by a cast under the direction of archaeologist James McKeon, along with scripts that have been professionally written based upon real historical events during the DeBurgo over-lordship of the region. We will also be giving free guided walks of Medieval Galway from the Hall of the Red Earl.

With origins in the 1200s, The Hall of the Red Earl was Galway’s very first municipal building and was utilised for tax collection, banquet hosting and the general administration of justice. Essentially a town hall, courthouse and tax office all under one roof, the building took its name from Richard de Burgo who just happened to be the Earl of Ulster, the grandson of the town’s founding father.
